For your information…….

Anesthesia is a relatively younger specialty of medical science, less than 2 centuries,…….

It started as a simple, rather unsafe technique if rendering someone unconsciousness for surgery by pouring ether over his face covered with layers of cotton gauze.

Just take short tour..

Anesthesia as a specialty

  • It’s an advanced branch of medicine today
  • It’s an independent specialty which one is allowed to practice after proper training and qualification
  • Practice of this specialty requires both knowledge of different branches of Medicine and skills in equal measure. After all, to knock down someone unconscious and bring them back to normal after a period of surgery is no child’s play! Or for that matter, neither making only a part of your body numb, yet maintain your breathing or other other vitals stable.
  • It covers the not only the art and science of rendering a patient unconscious( general anesthesia) or making a part of the body numb (regional anesthesia), but also deals with pain management, both acute or chronic (persistent), sedation (providing sleep, which is less than general anesthesia) for various procedures including dental treatment, resuscitation (the science of reviving a patient or person who is almost dead or collapsed ), intensive care and disaster management.

Anesthesiologist

  • He or she is always a medical graduate with a post graduate degree, similar to medicine, surgery or pediatrics ……

  • It’s anesthesiologits’ responsibility to take care of the patient during the period of surgery or for the duration for which the patient is under his or her care.

  • The primary responsibility is to provide optimal conditions for surgery. This involves use of several drugs and performing certain procedures, all of which are inherently risky, but the anesthesiologist is trained to ensure your safety at all times.

What you need to disclose and discuss with your anethesiologist when you or need a surgery or sedation for any other procedures?
